8 tips to preserve your hair health this summer

8 tips to preserve your hair health this summer

Summer, what a great season! With the sun, the pool and the beach, it's hard not to enjoy. But what about our hair? The sun, heat, pool chemicals, and salt water can be damaging. Here are 8 tips to preserve your hair health this summer... naturally!

1. WEAR A LOOSE AND COMFORTABLE HAIRSTYLE
Tight hairstyles can be damaging because they tend to tear your hair, especially if it is wet (which is even more damaging). A loose braid is ideal to keep your hair under control and reduce exposure to the sun. Alternate with a loose bun or any other loose hairstyle the next day. This way, you won’t bring a continuous stress to the same strands.

2. COVER YOUR HAIR
Use a scarf or hat to cover your hair when you're in the sun. This provides additional UV protection and retains your scalp’s moisture, as well as reducing damage caused by the wind.

3. ADD SUNSCREEN
A quick way to add a little protection is to work your hands lightly through your hair after applying sunscreen on your body.

4. DAMPEN YOUR HAIR
Mix water, aloe vera juice and avocado oil. Keep this mix handy and spray it on your hair when it is dry or frizzy. You can also use argan oil with water. Another option is to simply spray water before entering the pool or ocean. This adds an extra layer on your hair, so it is less likely to absorb too much chemicals or salt.

5. WASH YOUR HAIR AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE
Frequent washing removes natural oils from the scalp, which in turn stimulates the overproduction of oils and makes your hair feel like it needs to be washed more often. Rinse it in the shower after a day at the beach or pool. Use a dry shampoo when necessary.

6. KEEP YOUR HAIR MOISTURIZED
Coconut oil, olive oil or avocado oil are perfect for penetrating the hair. Wash your hair, then apply the oil from the ends to the roots. Rinse, then apply a conditioner. You can also rinse your hair with diluted apple cider vinegar in water for a good, natural conditioner.

7. USE A WIDE-TOOTHED COMB INSTEAD OF A BRUSH
Avoid using a brush when your hair is wet as it is more fragile and breakable. Wide-tooth combs are perfect to detangle hair and minimize damage.

8. REDUCE THE USE OF HEAT
Forget your hair dryer or flat iron. Your hair is already exposed to heat during the summer. Don’t add more!
