Q.: What is a probiotic ?

A.: A probiotic is a preparation containing living microorganisms, that benefits the host by improving intestinal microflora. These bacteria aid in the maintenance of a stable intestinal ecosystem. It is now recognized that maintaining a healthy gastro-intestinal flora can protect against gastrointestinal infection.

Q.: When must I take probiotics ?

A.: At 45 years old and up : the amount of Bifidobacterium drops ( it is then recommended to take probiotics ), dietary changes from travel, preventively to maintain a healthy intestinal flora (take on a regular basis), to improve the immune response, when having gastric discomfort ( heartburn) or when taking antibiotics (continue for an additional week after taking).

Q.: What are the benefits of probiotics ?

A.: Helps prevent and relieve symptoms of:

- Allergy and atopy

- Bloating and gas

- Blood cholesterol level

- Colds and the flu

- Constipation

- Chronic urinary infections

- Diarrhea associated antibiotic, to Clostridium difficile, to rotavirus infections, traveler’s diarrhea, post-irridation and juvenile diarrhea

- Digestion

- Gastro-enteritis

- General infections and contagion

- Infant colic

- Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis)

- Irritable bowel syndrome

- Lactose intolerance

- Oral ulcers

- Sore throats

- Strengthens the immune system

- Vaginitis related to antibiotic use

Q.: Does the amount of bacteria in a probiotic impacts on its efficiency ?

A: A good probiotic must observe 4 essential criteria (see back of folder). Combining these criteria with taking on an empty stomach or away from meals helps the strains  move to the intestine to allow better adhesion. It is more about the resilience of the strains than the quantity during their trip to the intestine. The strains used by Virage  Santé have this resilience, so high concentration is not necessary for them to be efficient.

Q.: What is the difference between a powder and a capsule or yogurt probiotic ?

A.: Powder probiotics go through the stomach faster, so they are less affected by gastric acidity. When taken on an empty stomach in a small amount of cold water, probiotics go settle themselves in the intestine faster. This  is why most of Virage Santé’s probiotics come in powder form.

Q.: If I am pregnant, can I take probiotics ?

A.: According to some studies, probiotics could limit risks of allergies in upcoming babies. This makes it of interest  to take it while pregnant.

Q.: What is the best liquid to take in diluted powder probiotics ?

A.: We recommend taking probiotics on an empty stomach in a small quantity of cold water. This way, the bacteria will reach the targeted areas faster. Furthermore, our probiotics solubilize themselves rapidly and have no taste.

Q. : I am interested to Pedi-Biotic probiotic for my 3 & 5 year old - is it disolvable in juice?

A. : You can effectively dilute powder of Pedi-Biotic probiotic in juice or other cold liquid. It's not recommended to dilute powder in hot liquid because the product loses its effectiveness (bacteria die faster).

Q.: Are there any side effects ?

A.: Virage Santé’s probiotics are natural, contain no preserving or chemical agents and are specific to humans. They can be used by all family members without risk.

Q.: Can I carry probiotics with me while traveling ?

A.: Our probiotics are great assets and can help prevent undesirable situations on vacations. Virage Santé thought of a travel format with this in mind.

Q.: Is there any counter-indication to taking probiotics if I am allergic to dairy or lactose intolerant?

A.: Lactobacillus is a bacteria produced in a "fermenter". For it to multiply, it has to be in a culture medium usually containing dairy products. Through the fabrication process, it is purified; all traces of culture medium are removed. Since it is produced that way, Health Canada asks that we specify on the package that: "This product has been in contact with milk products. Do not consume if you are allergic to dairy". However, clinical studies have shown that Lactobacillus is beneficial for people suffering from lactose intolerance.

Q.: Is there sugar in Bifidofib and Lactofib?

A.: The added flavor in the Bifidofib and Lactofib probiotics is of entirely natural origin. The flavor comes from the fruits' natural juice which is then dehydrated and pulverized in order to include it easily in the probiotics mix powder. Minimal doses of sugar (0.9g and 0.6g) are found in Bifidofib and Lactofib and are identified in the nutritional values table.

Q.: Is one bag of Bifidofib equivalent to a dose of Ofibid?

A.: Bifidofib contains two times the dose of Ofibid. They are formulated from the same strain (Bifidobacterium longum BB536), but soluble fibers, prebiotics and a natural tangerine flavor are also added to maximize intestinal regularity and digestion. It is the same for Lactofib and Balacta: they have the same strains (Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and Lactobacillus acidophilus LAC361), but quantities are doubled in Lactofib. In addition, soluble fibers, digestive enzymes, prebiotics and a natural mixed berries flavor are added.

Q.: Can Bifidofib be mixed with something else?

A.: A bag can be mixed without problems into fruit juice, in your cereals or even yogurt. What is important is to follow the recommended daily dose in order to get the best results.
